I decided to go outside this morning and do a little weeding. Here in Florida, winter is the best time to be out of doors. Suddenly I was reminded of a time long ago when I had two little blonde children ages 6 and 8. They were bored and they sought me out to complain as their way of entertainment.
I took them outside with me and handed them plastic bags. I raked up old dead grass and they put it in the bags. We were under the shade of an old tree, but it was warm. We lived in Winter Garden, Florida back then. I remember they kept asking me, ‘Why are we doing this?’ I replied that it needed to be done and since we had nothing to do, we might as well do it. A bit of grumbling ensued but we worked for about an hour. I put the bags out by the road and then turned on the sprinkler. The kids quickly went to grab their swim suits. They were delighted to run through the sprinkler.
They didn’t realize it , but I was letting them work off their excess energy. By the time suppertime came, both of them were tired.
So often I will be doing something and little memories of my child’s life will drift by. I smile as I remember those times. I wouldn’t want to go back. But, it’s nice to remember.
Now, lunch is over and I have more weeding to do.
